The (5) Things a Fergie Song Reminded Me About Business
There are plenty of places where you can look for inspiration, mentorship, and lessons on business that are conventional. Perhaps you look to your favorite book on leadership, a former boss from your last job, maybe even posts from Forbes, or referencing back to one of your textbooks from your MBA. There are also some places you wouldn’t expect to find encouraging business lessons. Like in one of Fergie’s (yes, the pop singer) newest songs. But that’s where I found several reminders about business principles. Fergie’s latest drop has reminded me of experiences I had or am currently having and ultimately it's given me a bit of encouragement to keep pressing forward. Here’s the top 5 things she reminded me about business:
1) Business Can be Complicated
We all know that’s the understatement of the year. However, business can be rewarding for those who stick out even the toughest of situations and learn to navigate the most complex of waters.
2) Sometimes Your Biggest Critic is You
The one person that faces you in the mirror every morning often has the most to say about you. If you think you can’t or you think you can--the differentiator is likely just you.
3) You Have to Stay Hungry
Stay hungry, starving, and ambitious. I was reminded that staying hungry helps you keep in hot pursuit of the things you need to be doing. However, there is a tipping point when you become thirsty, or desperate. Avoid the thirst. Make sure you maintain hydration (read: balance).
4) Don't Think Small
Don’t even think medium. It’s still not large enough. Think big. If your thinking is restricted, you’ll never have the audacity to make much happen or assist others in making their own waves. Be creative and just go for it.
5) It Takes Courage
To accomplish what you set out to do, you will need a steady supply of courage. Surround yourself with people who believe in you. Acknowledge there might be 'haters', but do not give them your time, treasure, or talent.
Perhaps these five things were at the top of my mind prior to listening to Fergie’s music, nonetheless, I took inspiration from the song’s lyrics and felt compelled to go out and apply myself more and more. We all need a few reminders now and again. Mine just happened to come in an unconventional format and a catchy song played on repeat.
